LUCIA TALLOVA

Lucia Tallová is an established figure of the Slovak contemporary art. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. Her works have been presented at many exhibitions to Central European (solo Artissima 2019) audiences but also in New York(Volta 2018), Paris(Art Paris), and Milan(Miart), in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka). She took part in a residency at the Headlands San Francisco, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and Brasília. She won several awards in Slovakia and Austria, and her works are in collections Slovak National gallery, MAM in Rio de Janeiro, MUSEU Nacional da República Brasília, and many important private collections around the world.

Lucia Tallová is inspired by the environment she lives in, relationships and their interconnection with the past. She has been using archives and collections as her motifs for many years. The central theme is our memory, how we preserve our memories and how they fade away and disappear, how they can be changed or manipulated in the course of time.

Paintings, large-sized canvases, and small watercolours on paper seem to capture movement as a form of a cycle of constancy - water that changes into water vapour; crystallizes and then returns to its original state. This transformation, which is the cypher of motion (but the motion from the perspective of time!), happens also when the images of water vapour vanish before our eyes and disappear into an abstract painting, which is perhaps an even truer portrait of its subject.

Objects from series Waiting like a stone
In her work Lucia Tallova is inspired by the environment she lives in, relationships and their interconnection with the past. The central theme is our memory, how we preserve our memories and how they fade away and disappear, how they can be changed or manipulated in the course of time. She works on photographs and objects that she assembles and deploys in space. The manipulations and themes she approaches create a new link, both material and poetic, between the elements on display.

Object from series objects "Waiting like a stone"
Lucia Tallova often makes use of her earlier ink drawings and watercolours. Previously unseen, pulled out of her archive and reused in collages, these works of art are now “alive again”. Some of the works refer to the automatic drawing, to running in circles or retelling old stories. The central topic in this case is the cyclical repeating, intuitive collecting and preserving, or ceaseless reorganizing of objects in space.

Object, sentimental, fragile object from black pigment powder pointing of family archive and memories. Parts of furniture that are a common part of households, such as drawers, cabinets, or lockers, refer to the theme of home and personal family history. Especially the household is often referred to as the territory of women - wife. In this works the artist discuss the position of women in society but also the conflict between personal (private) and public life. Intimate personal memories we keep locked up at home. The female aspect plays an important role in the works of Lucia Tallova. It manifests itself through the symbols of feminineness, nostalgy and sentiment. The artist works with historical content, drawing on various eras, and uses old photos from the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. She compares the position of women from the beginning of last century with their current situation at the beginning of the 21st. A woman thus becomes the main character of a re-told story, personalised by the artist.

Tallova’s appropriation of photographic material extracted from the most varied publications: History, Geography, Botany books or from magazines produced and published in the places where the artist develops her artistic residency, as well as the appropriation of pieces and fragments of furniture and the manufacture of expographical structures, which oscillate between the ancient Cabinets of Curiosities which peopled Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as embryonic forms of the museums, libraries and the physical spaces which house institutional files, instill a poetical architecture which allows for the exact appreciation of Tallova’s artistry based on an expographic design which is integral to the concept of the works for it mirrors to perfection the allegories and metaphors that her oeuvre and its scansion in its distinct media and varied techniques conveys.
